As you know, Holly and I *had* to get married in order to be together, and while I'm more devoted to her than I can express, the fact of marriage doesn't change that devotion either way. I could just as easily have just lived with her.

But I felt awful when having to sign the marriage license, because I had to sign that I was 'born a man'. Which, firstly, isn't even true (I was born a baby) and secondly made me complicit in a homophobic law. (And, I later realised and felt ashamed for not realising sooner, a transphobic one).

And anything other than full equality does this. We have civil partnerships in the UK, which give *exactly* equivalent rights to marriage, but aren't marriage. Which means that if an already-married trans person wants to get their correct gender recognised in law, they have to get divorced first. Preventing some people from marrying is bad enough, but legally *requiring* some people to divorce... words can't describe how horrific that is.

I wish that being married didn't accord me any special privileges. I wish far more that my heterosexuality, masculinity and cisgender status didn't accord me any privileges either. First of all ZOMGHAI! <3
...(It's breeeeee)

First of all ZOMGHAI! <3

I love where you're coming from with this post. I do think, though, that Sarah Palin is not a feminist. This isn't due to beliefs that she may hold that are counterintuitive to feminism or problematic or even bigoted. As you say, I can't think of a single feminist, including myself, that doesn't hold problematic or contradictory beliefs and opinions.

The reason I don't think she's a feminist isn't because of what she does believe, but rather because of what she doesn't. I cannot think of a single piece of feminist theory or ideology--casual or ivory tower--that she purports to hold. Even the notion of women working outside of the home is not something she thinks Other Women should do, but rather something she gets to do as a special exception because God happens to like her more.

Even when you get down to the very minimum foundation of necessitates feminism as an organized system of thought, she fails. Just the notion of "women don't deserve to be hurt" with no more complexity than that, and she really can't agree. She's co-opting the word because that's a long standing strategy of the right.

Saying she isn't a feminist because she has some fucked up beliefs ignores the history (and nowstory, really) of fucked-up-belief-ness in feminism. That's a reality we need to deal with, and I love your post for that.

But saying she is a feminist simply because she identifies as one as RMJ did ignores the reality that people like to steal other people's identities. I am not a Buddhist simply because I decide one day to identify as one, even if I hold much of their philosophy to be valuable. I'm certainly not a Buddhist if I hold no Buddhist values, beliefs, or philosophical structure as my own. The only reason I would even have a desire to wear such a label when I have not one thing in common with every other member of that group is because I have an agenda--likely a malicious one.

She wants to twist the meaning of the word. I think it's important not to let her while still recognizing everything you talked about regarding what parts of her we can see in us that we should take a closer look at.Cephalopodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07194186301221958914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8078840411619735210.post-48206478511995692692010-05-02T19:25:03.018-07:002010-05-02T19:25:03.018-07:00This weekend, I made: vegan rosemary chocolate cup...This weekend, I made: vegan rosemary chocolate cupcakes; roasted carrots and potatoes; palak dal without tomato; chickpea salad (with unroasted peppers and the addition of green beans); dilly beans with broccoli, tomatoes, corn, carrots, and red onion; homemade pizza with flax seeds in the crust, brushed with rosemary & olive oil, coated with marinara & smoked tabasco sauce, and topped with mushrooms, bell pepper, sliced black olives, red onion, three cheeses, and cherry tomatoes.

It was an amazing food weekend!D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/15645895901947251952noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8078840411619735210.post-4197095263272185602010-02-22T19:02:03.456-08:002010-02-22T19:02:03.456-08:00Thank you for the link!Thank you for the link!Krista Bensonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11997208357081091348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8078840411619735210.post-74712099522884348202010-02-20T09:05:24.702-08:002010-02-20T09:05:24.702-08:00I agree with your comments regarding parking lots,...I agree with your comments regarding parking lots,,, if you're looking to get involved with opposing a parking lot in the middle of the Manito neighborhood take a look at our blog.
http://saynotostmarks.blogspot.com
Would love your support. When Lizzie heard that I had to go into surgery, she emailed over a bunch of stuff to me that she said we could file, as long as I pay the filing fee. Which is ALSO potentially a class issue - not everyone knows a lawyer, you know?

No lasers yet, but I'm hopeful!

ahestele - We lucked out, too. The nurses and doctors were amazing (in fact, I suspect my surgeon is a dyke, which makes me very happy). I really do feel like these are the stories, though, that I need to tell my parents and other people who wonder why queer people want to get married (which, actually, I don't, but this is a good reason to) - because nobody needs to be worrying about all of this while going in for surgery, you know?Krista Bensonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11997208357081091348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8078840411619735210.post-23635425205047516402009-07-23T06:33:57.209-07:002009-07-23T06:33:57.209-07:00Yeah, D and I faced that when I had my boring, hap...Yeah, D and I faced that when I had my boring, happens-all-the-time, routine hysterectemy.
